Microsoft, OpenAI Revise Partnership to Expand Cloud Flexibility
Under the revised arrangement, Microsoft will continue as OpenAI’s primary cloud provider, with OpenAI products expected to launch first on Azure whenever Microsoft is able and willing to support the necessary infrastructure.
According to reports, the updated agreement also gives OpenAI greater freedom to distribute its products across multiple cloud services, marking a move away from a more restrictive, single-provider structure.
Microsoft will retain access to OpenAI’s intellectual property related to models and products through 2032, although this access will no longer be exclusive.
The financial structure between the two companies has also been adjusted. Microsoft will no longer pay revenue-sharing fees to OpenAI, while OpenAI will continue making payments to Microsoft under existing terms until 2030, subject to an overall limit.
At the same time, Microsoft is expected to remain a major investor and continue playing a significant role in OpenAI’s expansion and development.
Both companies stated that the revised deal is aimed at improving long-term predictability as they scale artificial intelligence systems, while also allowing each side more independence to explore new commercial and technical opportunities.
