DR Congo Secures Historic World Cup Spot After Five-Decade
The decisive match took place in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Tuesday, where DR Congo edged out a 1-0 win in a closely fought play-off. The breakthrough came in the 100th minute of extra time, when defender Axel Tuanzebe netted the winning goal.
Scenes of celebration quickly spread across the capital, Kinshasa, as residents poured into the streets to mark the achievement. Authorities subsequently declared Wednesday a public holiday to commemorate the national team’s success. The team, widely known as the Leopards, secured their long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.
Government officials described the achievement as “historic,” encouraging citizens to celebrate “in unity, fervor, and national pride.”
A deputy government spokesperson also praised the team’s accomplishment, stating: “Leopards stepping up for Africa! Congratulations DR Congo, go make the continent proud on the world stage.”
“We did it for us, for you, all the Congolese from all over the world for a whole people who deserve it,” DR Congo defender Joris Kayembe said.
The country’s only previous participation in the World Cup dates back to 1974, when it competed under its former name, Zaire.
Despite the sporting triumph, the nation continues to face significant challenges, including ongoing instability linked to the presence of the M23 rebel group, which controls parts of the country and contributes to continued conflict and humanitarian concerns.
