UN head worried over international law breach after Venezuela’s invasion

(MENAFN) The United Nations leadership on Monday renewed strong concerns about violations of international law in the wake of recent US military action in Venezuela that led to the detention of President Nicolas Maduro.

Addressing an emergency meeting focused on Venezuela, a senior UN official delivered a message from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasizing the central role of international legal principles. In the statement, Guterres said: “I have consistently stressed the imperative of full respect, by all, for international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, which provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.”

The secretary-general expressed particular unease over the circumstances surrounding the military operation, stating: “I remain deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action.”

According to the statement, Guterres underscored that the UN Charter clearly “enshrines the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” warning that respect for these principles is critical to maintaining global stability.

He further emphasized that collective security depends on consistent adherence to agreed rules, saying: “The maintenance of international peace and security depends on the continued commitment of all member States to adhere to all the provisions of the Charter.”

Highlighting the importance of legal consistency during periods of uncertainty, the statement added: “In situations as confused and complex as the one we now face, it is important to stick to principles.” Guterres reiterated the need for “Respect for the UN Charter and all other applicable legal frameworks to safeguard peace and security. Respect for the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of states,” calling for “the power of law” to take precedence.

The secretary-general also noted that international law already provides mechanisms to address complex challenges, stating: “International law contains tools to address issues such as illicit traffic in narcotics, disputes about resources and human rights concerns.”

The emergency meeting was convened following a formal request submitted earlier this month by Venezuela’s diplomatic mission, with backing from allied states, according to reports.
