Indonesia Suspends TikTok License Over Lack of Livestream Data
"This step reflects the government's firm response to TikTok's decision to provide incomplete data on TikTok Live activities during the unrest between August 25 and 30, 2025," stated Alexander Sabar, director general of digital space supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, as quoted by a state-owned news outlet.
TikTok had paused its livestreaming services amid the August turmoil, calling it part of broader "security measures."
The protests — which initially erupted over plans to raise lawmakers’ allowances — turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and leaving many others wounded, including law enforcement personnel.
Tensions intensified after a motorbike driver was fatally hit by a police armored vehicle in Jakarta on August 28, triggering widespread disturbances across multiple regions.
In the capital, demonstrators set fire to law enforcement offices and public buildings, demolished numerous vehicles, broke windows, razed guard booths, and injured officers by throwing projectiles.
Sabar noted the ministry’s action followed the platform's refusal to release data concerning traffic patterns and revenue generated through livestreaming features, amid suspicions of a rise in illicit gambling content on the app.
"We summoned TikTok for direct clarification on September 16 and urged it to submit complete data no later than September 23," he explained, pointing out that the platform declined to provide the requested information, citing its own internal data-handling rules and protocols.
