Spain Aims to Safeguard Abortion Rights in Constitution

(MENAFN) Spain’s progressive administration has vowed to secure the right to abortion within the nation’s constitution.

This commitment comes in response to controversy over the Madrid city council’s initiative to distribute details on "post-abortion syndrome" to individuals seeking to end their pregnancies.

On Friday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared that his ruling alliance of Socialists and far-left parties will submit a proposal for constitutional amendment to parliament.

He emphasized that the rights of women will not be compromised by opposing factions.

Sanchez criticized the right-leaning Popular Party (PP), accusing it of “merging with the far right” after PP representatives in Madrid supported a Vox party motion requiring clinics to give informational material to women contemplating abortion.

"With this government, there will be no backtracking on social rights," Sanchez posted on X, adding that the proposed changes will also revise current legislation to protect pregnant individuals from receiving "misleading or anti-scientific information about abortion."

Altering Spain’s constitution necessitates a three-fifths vote in parliament, which means the Socialist-led government will need to gain some backing from opposition members.

The PP-controlled Madrid council approved the initiative on Tuesday, instructing healthcare providers to inform women about emotional distress potentially linked to abortion.

Vox argued that such a condition could result in drug dependency, suicidal behavior, or even cancer.

The initiative sparked public criticism, with health professionals pointing out that there is no medical agreement on the existence of such a syndrome.

On Thursday, Madrid’s Mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, admitted that the condition is not scientifically recognized and clarified that women would not be compelled to accept the information.
