Syria begins first elections for its People’s Assembly

(MENAFN) Syria commenced voting for its People’s Assembly on Sunday, marking the nation’s first parliamentary elections since the collapse of the previous regime, according to reports.

Accredited electoral centers across the country opened to welcome members of the electoral bodies and begin the voting process, signaling the official start of Syria’s parliamentary election, as stated by reports.

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa had received the final draft of a temporary electoral law for the parliament in late July and approved it on August 27. The decree outlined the framework for the election, including eligibility criteria for membership in the People’s Assembly and its committees, as well as voting procedures.

The Assembly comprises 210 seats, with one-third directly appointed by the president and the remaining two-thirds filled through elections under this temporary mechanism, which officials describe as suited to current circumstances.

Since the departure of the former leader in late 2024, Syria’s new government has been implementing political and economic reforms, promoting social cohesion, and expanding cooperation with regional and international partners.

After nearly 25 years in power, Assad fled to Russia last December, bringing an end to the Baath Party regime that had governed since 1963. The transitional administration under Sharaa was established in January.
