Marine Forces South Marks 27 Years of Strengthening Partnerships

NEW ORLEANS — U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South commemorated nearly three decades of operational excellence and enduring defense relationships throughout the Americas and the Caribbean today.

"For 27 years, MARFORSOUTH has demonstrated the importance of strong partnerships and a shared commitment to security in the Western Hemisphere," said Lt. Gen. Leonard F. Anderson IV, commander of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces South. "Our Marines, Sailors and civilians, alongside our allies and partners, have built a legacy of cooperation that enhances our collective ability to defeat threats and respond to emerging challenges."

Since its activation on Oct. 1, 1999, MARFORSOUTH has played a vital role in defense and security cooperation as well as supporting a ready and capable Marine Corps presence across the region.

Through combined operations, exercises, training and foreign humanitarian assistance, MARFORSOUTH and regional partners build collective capabilities and shared security. These efforts were most recently highlighted by exercises PANAMAX 2026 (a biennial exercise focused on security around the Panama Canal) and UNITAS 2026 (the region’s longest-running maritime exercise), which reinforced interoperability and readiness across multinational naval forces.

Headquartered in New Orleans as the Marine Corps service component of U.S. Southern Command, MARFORSOUTH continues to plan, coordinate and execute operations and activities that develop regional defense, strengthen partner-nation capabilities and increase readiness throughout the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility.

"Our success stands on the dedication of our people and the trust we have established with our partners," said Anderson. "As we recognize this milestone, we remain focused on advancing our shared objectives and ensuring our forces are ready when called upon."
